Starsky & Hutch is a 2004 comedy film based on the 70’s show of the same name. Though unlike that series, which ran for over 90 episodes, this film is a lot less serious and a bit of a spoof. Or so I’ve been informed. Truth be told I’ve never seen any of the original episodes. So for that reason I won’t go comparing this film to its source material but as a its own film.
The film is set in the 70s and follows two undercover cops, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, trying to bust a drug ring in the fictional Bay City, California. While the film isn’t the funniest of the so-called “Frat Pack” movies I had a smile on my face for the most part. It does have some great moments though. The disco dance-off and garage gag to name just two.
Like them or not Stiller and Wilson work great together in the lead roles and Vince Vaughn works well as the drug kingpin antagonist. The late Chris Penn also deserves a mention for his minor but memorable role as clichéd cop Manetti.
Overall the film is a genuine entertaining buddy cop movie and a great way to celebrate the show and era it’s representing in a humorous and fun way.
