For England, James?

So last night I sat down to watch a film I had fond memories of. A film I hadn’t watched for several years now. That film? GoldenEye.

GoldenEye is the 17th film in the James Bond series and the first starring Pierce Brosnan in the lead role. The film is about some typical Bond baddies trying to use the GoldenEye satellite weapon against London in order to cause a global financial meltdown and steal a bunch of money.

As a lifelong gamer I can’t talk about the film GoldenEye with out mentioning the simply fantastic N64 videogame tie in. Perhaps it’s because I spent so many hours playing that game that I hold this film in such high regard. In fact even now when I watch the film I can’t help mutter to myself “that’s just like the level in the game”. Having this sort of attachment makes it difficult to criticise the film.

If you can ignore the somewhat cheesy dialogue, clichés and silly plotholes you’ll find a very enjoyable and entertaining action film.  Pierce Brosnan is great as James Bond. His portrayal of the character has a perfect mix of smooth charm while still being relatively dark. Plus Famke Janssen is smoking hot throughout.

Is it a perfect film? Not quite. Is it Golden? Aye.
